Elvis FB Page
Subject: Elvis FB Page Message from Martin Clarke July 3, 2022 6:14 am Hi Folks, Lately we’ve been getting a multitude of requests to join the Facebook group from scammy fake profiles. To circumvent the problem I’ve temporarily made the group hidden which means it is only visible to group members. Consequently for the time being if any of your members want to join the group they will may still do so by an existing member of the group requesting this via the invite button. I’ll keep this restriction in place for a little while and make it visible again in a few weeks to see if the problem has gone away. If not I guess I will have to make it permanent. Many thanks Martin

— COPY OF EMAIL SENT OUT —
Dear athlete,
East End Road Runners (the purples) are super excited to welcome you to our Midsummer 5km tomorrow evening. We really hope you can find a way through the rail and Tube strike to celebrate the longest day of the year with a run in the sunshine in the beautiful Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park and a drink at our purple after-party.
With just 24 hours to go, here is your pre-race briefing (please read it carefully)….
General Information
Start time: The race starts at 7.30pm. Please arrive with plenty of time to collect your race number. The registration desk will be open between 6.30pm and 7.20pm.
Race Location: Hopkins Field, Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park (northern section), E20 3BS. Please note, this is adjacent to the Here East complex in Waterden Road.
Toilets and Changing: Toilets and changing facilities will be available in the Velopark, E20 3AB. This is about 400m to the east of the start area.

Timing: The race will be chip-timed to allow runners to have an individual time. However, the results for the race will be based on gun times.
Course and timing: It is a fast 2-lap course. Please run over the timing mat at the start, middle and end of the race to ensure your time (and split) are recorded accurately.
Prizes: A prize giving ceremony will take place immediately following the race. There will be 14 prizes based on gun-time results: 1st (£25), 2nd (£15) and 3rd (£10) overall male and female; 1st male and female vet in age categories 40, 50, 60 and 70 (at £10 each). There will be a maximum of one prize per person.
After-party: All participants are warmly invited to celebrate the longest day of the year by attending a special Midsummer party at Mother Kelly’s bar, 27-30 Victory Parade, East Village, E20 1FS. This is about 10 mins’ walk from the finish area.
Baggage drop: Clubs affiliated to the ELVIS series are encouraged to organise their own bag drops. Unaffiliated runners may leave their bags in the small unofficial baggage drop provided by the registration desk. Bags are left at owner’s risk. Additionally, lockers are available in the Velopark.
Bike storage: Bikes must not be left by the start/finish area. They must be locked and secured in the available bike racks, the closest of which is located outside Clarinco Club Cafe on Waterden Rd, E15 2GY.

Pacing in Elvis – Update
Subject: Pacing in Elvis – Update Message from Martin Clarke June 19, 2022 6:37 am Hi Folks, Following my previous email I thank all who have provided input to allow me to come to a final decision on the alleged pacing incident at last Tuesday’s race. I’m especially grateful to Darren for speaking to both athletes that were involved.
From our collective findings I am satisfied that there was no pre conceived plan or intent to pace although it was unwise for Gemma, Morgan’s training partner, to participate in the race without a number. I also believe that no real advantage was gained and the result was the same as it would have been had Gemma been absent from the race. I think this was simply a case of both ladies not realising that their actions might cause a problem.
Given the circumstances and in the spirit of Elvis I don’t wish to take too hard a line on Morgan and considering both ladies have now apologised I have decided not to void Morgan’s result in Elvis and her 2nd place still stands.
Although the runners concerned do not belong to an Elvis Club may I ask club reps and organisers to ensure their members are aware of both the rules and spirit of Elvis moving forward. As I said in my previous email it is quite acceptable for officials to request that anyone running without a number immediately leave the course regardless of whether or not pacing is suspected.
For further clarity it has been brought to my attention that sometimes club runners will return after finishing to help out slower runners at the rear of the field. They may or may not still be displaying numbers and are also sometimes joined by non participants. In such cases this is perfectly acceptable as it is not classified as pacing and is simply encouraging slower runners at the rear of the field to finish and if anything exemplifies rather than contravenes the spirit of the series . It is also seldom likely that this has any tangible effect on the results.
Please let me know if you have any further questions or comments. I hope we can now draw a line under this and look forward to our next race at the Olympic Park hosted by our friends at EERR. Many thanks Martin
EERR Midsummer 5km
Subject: EERR Midsummer 5km Message from Jamie Zucker June 16, 2022 12:42 am Hi fellow Elvis club reps,
Thank you to everyone who has already registered to run EERR’s Midsummer 5km Elvis race next Tuesday 21 June.
We are aware that a National Rail and Tube strike has now been scheduled for that day. We appreciate that this may cause disruption for some participants, but after careful consideration we have decided to progress with the event as planned.
There is a chance that the strike will be called off (fingers crossed). However, if that doesn’t happen, we hope participants will find a way of attending as everyone here at East End Road Runners is super excited to host the event. It is after all the longest day of the year so even if it takes longer than usual to travel, you should make it home before it gets dark! We promise to make attending the event worth your while with a fast course and a fun and friendly atmosphere.
We hope you find the following information useful:

As we are a non-profit club with a number of fixed overheads for hosting this race, we regret that we will be unable to offer refunds to anyone who can’t make it. However, as fellow runners, we hope you will appreciate that your entrance fee will go towards supporting running and the fitness of our members and of our local community.
With many thanks

Pacing in Elvis Races
Subject: Pacing in Elvis Races Message from Martin Clarke June 15, 2022 4:36 pm Hi Folks, Well done to Darren and the team at H90J for organizing as great race last night. Regretfully I have received a complaint regarding some pacing that was taking place at the front of the women’s race whereby a runner without a number was pacing the lead, Morgan Campbell of Havering AC for most of the race, the unentered runner ducking out at the end. There was some justice that Morgan eventually only finished 2nd but even so this is totally unfair on other runners and a clear violation of the rules and spirit of Elvis. Whilst I would not wish to interfere with the actual race result which always falls within the sovereignty of the hosting club race organisers, I have to make a decision with regard to the Elvis series for although Morgan doesn’t belong to an Elvis Club she does qualify in the individual competition. My intention is therefore to void Morgan’s result for this race only from the Elvis series. If anybody has any objection to this or wants to express any mitigating circumstances or other comments please let me know. I will put something on the facebook page to restate that pacing by any runner not in the race is unacceptable in Elvis and is likely to result in disqualification. Can I also ask that Race officials and especially organisers look out for this type of thing and if spotted they are perfectly entitled to request (politely) that the unentered runner (no number) immediately leave the course. I do of course recognize that volunteer marshals might be reluctant to use this authority even if they are aware of it but it would greatly help that at the very least any such violation of the rules is reported to the race organizer/referee at the end of the race so that a decision can be made prior to prizegiving. Many thanks Martin
